A Fancy Dress Ball
This is an oil painting of the Fancy Dress Ball held at the Assembly Rooms, Manchester on 1 October 1828 painted by artist Arthur Perigal. The Ball was a major social event in Manchester.
The Fancy Dress Ball was held as part of the Manchester Festival of Music to raise money for local charities. It was attended by about 3500 people and around 300 paid to be included in the painting. The painting was raffled and won by a local man, Mr Peacock, who appears in the painting as the Knave of Hearts. He presented it to Salford in 1852
Also in our collection is a Napoleon Bonaparte costume worn at the ball and depicted in the painting.
