Among the Lilies
Edward Atkinson Hornel
This painting is by Edward Atkinson Hornel who was a well known British artist in the late 19th and early 20th century.
He was one of the group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys who experimented with Impressionist techniques. After a visit to Japan in 1883-84 he developed a more decorative style, using impasto (thickly applied paint) to create a patterned surface texture, as in this painting.
His paintings of girls among flowers were hugely popular and were collected by many municipal galleries.
