Bust of Henry VIII

Bust of Henry VIII, carved in cannel coal by Robert Towne for the Earl of Crawford in 1756.

The object is carved in cannel coal mined in the Haigh area of Wigan. It was reputedly commissioned by Lord Crawford in 1756, and the work carried out by local sculptor Robert Towne for one guinea.
