Clock or Time Recorder
1880 - 1920
Clocking in clock made by International Time Recording Co Ltd and used in a Rochdale Mill to record and monitor employees time keeping.
The face of the clock shows employee numbers which would be dialed up by employees entering and leaving the mill. The day and time of entry and exit was punched onto cards inside the box. This allowed a timekeeper to have an official record of the hours an employee worked which was then used to calculate the pay owed to them.
Working conditions for most mill employees were terribly bad and staff would be docked at least fifteen minutes pay if they were just a minute late for work.
