Commemorative Trowel and Mallet

1900

Commemorative trowel and mallet used for the laying of the foundation tablet of Wigan Mining and Technical College by the Countess of Crawford.

The college building, now the Town Hall, is a listed building and opened in 1903. Wigan was dominated by collieries and the College opened in part as a response to the many mining disasters that occurred in the area.
