King George VI Coronation Mug

Made by Wedgwood, this commemorative mug shows silhouettes of the Royal Arms with bursts of fireworks.

These ceramic memorabilia items were created for the coronation of King George VI on 12th May 1937.

The coronation was a major event in the history of the early BBC television service. It was the first true live outside television broadcast, and the BBC took great risk to televise it, despite them being refused permission to broadcast the ceremony within Westminster Abbey.

The BBC’s risk paid off, the television pictures of the king smiling as his carriage passed by the cameras captured the imagination of the viewers and of the press.
