Early Map of Stockport
Early map of Stockport in faded brown ink on velum. Drawn by an unknown hand.
This is the earliest map or plan of Stockport known to date. It shows central streets and buildings, including the market place which still sits in the same site today. A numbered key to individual properties on the right includes the butcher’s shop, market house, market cross and the ‘conduit,’ which supplied the public with water. Stamped to top left and bottom right ‘WR Vaughn’ with the Stockport crest.
