Eccles Hoard

circa 1230

This is an example of one of several coin hoards found in the Salford area.

It consists of an earthenware vessel in which the hoard of coins was found plus 20 silver pennies from the original hoard of about 6000. 18 English coins from the reign of John or Henry III, a Scottish William I ‘The Lion’ coin and an Irish coin.

It was discovered by a young cotton worker during the construction of Wellington Road, Eccles in 1864.

The hoard was declared treasure trove and the coins presented to the British Museum. About 20 were later given to Salford Museum.
