This collection of around 40 posters dates from the 1900 General Election. The Oldham contest that year was significant as it resulted in the election of Winston Churchill to parliament for the first time.
These posters are the original printer’s proofs. Each is marked on the back with its print run – between 50 and 300 copies.
Winston Churchill is best known for his leadership during the Second World War. But his long career in politics began in Oldham when he first stood for election at a by-election in 1899. Although he was unsuccessful with this first attempt he returned at the General Election of 1900 and won his seat despite coming second in the poll. At the time the Oldham constituency returned two MPs and in 1900 this meant one from each party – one Liberal and one Conservative.
