Guardian Figures (cuchimilco)
1200 - 1470
Ceramic guardian figures were important in Chancay culture. They normally come in pairs of male and female figures. The figures are similar but have different painted decoration to indicate gender differences in dress.
These figures are exceptional in their size and that their clothing has been preserved with the figures. The male figure wore a poncho and the female figure wore a dress with a shoulder strap.
The exact function of these figures is unknown, but it is thought that they may have acted as guardians to the tombs of the Chancay people.
