Imperial Standard Half Gallon measure, brass with bone handles, with ‘Manor of Stockport, 1842’ stamped on one side. Made by R B Bate of London, a maker of scientific instruments. Small imprints around the rim show when the standard measure itself was checked for accuracy.
Part of a large collection of imperial weights and measures from the County Borough of Stockport trading standards department. They were used to test commercial weighing and measuring equipment in Stockport, ensuring local consumers could buy goods with confidence.
