Microscope and Microscope Slide Cabinet
Brass microscope and wooden and glazed microscope slide cabinet with inscribed brass plaque on top surface containing several hundred microscope slides
It remained in Nield’s family until 2011 when it was donated to Gallery Oldham by his Great Great Grand daughter.
The cabinet is important as it was presented to Nield by the Oldham Microscopical Society. The following is the inscription:
cabinet & a purse containing 100 guineas were presented to Mr. James Nield by members of the Oldham Microscopical Society & Field Club and other friends of his as a testimonial of esteem & in recognition of his services in the cause of natural science.
The microscope slides contain a wide variety of material including insects, plant dissections and fossils.
