Olympic Ceremonial Headwear
Hat designed by milliner Zara Gorman. Worn by the Presenter Escorts during the London 2012 victory ceremonies.
The London 2012 Olympics was deemed a huge international success bringing a massive surge in national pride not seen for many a decade.
The hat’s design was inspired by the architecture of Olympic and Paralympic venues alongside aspects of British tailoring and sportswear. Gorman was particularly interested in using the roofs and facades of the Velodrome and Aquatic Centre in her final design.
The hat is an excellent example of contemporary design from one of the UK’s current leading milliners. Gorman has also created hats for Lady Gaga and Bjork.
The design was refined over a period of 8 months. It had to be lightweight, durable and comfortable for volunteers to wear. Each piece was formed using laser cut segments made from bonded fabric and constructed by hand.
