Pocket Watch

1795 - 1815

Pocket watch made in Wigan by James Coates.

Donated by a resident of Preston in the 1960s, made by well known clock making family of Coates, Wigan.

A Wigan clock and watch maker. The family were in business from c.1760s.

James Coates appears to have been an active clock maker in his own right from the late 1790s.

Clock making was a major industry in Wigan in this period.

Variations occur in the spelling of the family name. Some clocks read ‘Coats’ and some ‘Coates’.
