Queen Victoria’s Bonnet

circa 1870

Straw bonnet made by Henry Heath for Queen Victoria.

The bonnet was made at Henry Heath’s Hat Factory on Oxford Street, London.

Queen Victoria was Britain’s longest reigning monarch. Her reign of 63 years saw great industrial, cultural, political and military change, and was marked by the expansion of the British Empire.

Women’s hats during the Victorian era were often huge affairs laden with vast trimmings of feathers and flowers. This bonnet by Henry Heath is much more subtle in design being simply decorated with black and white embroidered silk gauze and ribbon.
