A Rickshaw print from Dhaka, Bangladesh.
This print was designed to fit onto a specific panel, on the back of a rickshaw.
This print demonstrates the impact of changing technology on the streets of Dhaka. It was bought by our art curator on a visit to Bangladesh in 2005. She had visited the country a decade earlier when all rickshaw art was hand painted.
By 2005 manufactured prints were beginning to take over from hand-painted panels, putting the painters out of work. Not only had the techniques changed, but also the subject matter. This print is a mass produced image from a film.
