Roman Egypt Mask
circa AD 120
Head / Roman death mask, showing the features of classical, especially Greek, art.
Egypt, Part of the Sir John Scott Egyptology collection donated to Wigan Museums service in 1924 by Sir Leslie Scott.
This rare mask comes from Egypt, then a province of the Roman Empire. It would have been placed over a mummified body.
The artistic style shows how the two ancient cultures influenced each other. It has an idealised face but looks more realistic than other examples of coffin masks from Ancient Egypt.
