Samplers

1775 - 1900

A sampler is a piece of needlework or embroidery produced as a demonstration piece.  Samplers were often produced by girls or young women and Gallery Oldham’s collection of over 60 such items is a significant one showing the accomplishments of many local people.

Samplers can tell us a great deal about the people who made them.  Some include family trees or memorial poetry dedicated to members of the maker’s family.  Others contain images of local buildings such as Oldham’s Bluecoat School.
