Silver Freedom casket made by Henry Wilkinson & Co. of Sheffield. This was presented by the County Borough of Bury to Oswald Osmond Wrigley on the occasion of the laying of the Foundation Stone of Bury Art Gallery in 1899.
Oswald Osmond Wrigley, Thomas Wrigley’s son, was made the first Freeman of the County Borough of Bury in 1899.
This hallmarked silver casket contains a hand-illuminated dedicatory scroll confirming that the recipient has been made the first Freeman of the County Borough of Bury. It is engraved with the Wrigley family coat of arms on one end and the County Borough’s coat of arms on the other. On the front is a view of the new Library & Art Gallery building and on the back is a view of the Wrigley family home, ‘Timberhurst’, and the whole is surmounted by a stag’s head, which is the Wrigley family crest.
