Frank Auerbach is an internationally renowned artist and reflects the high quality of work in Rochdale’s collection.
A highly influential figure in British art, Auerbach’s work is characterised by his heavy application and layering of paint. He scrapes away and re-paints an image many times before he considers it finished.
Alongside portraits and more abstract work, London’s sites and buildings have long been captured in Auerbach’s paintings as seen here.
Auerbach was born in Berlin to Jewish parents. By 1939 his parents were sufficiently worried by events unfolding in Germany to send their son with the Kindertransport to England. Many years later Auerbach found out they had been killed at Auschwitz in 1943.
