‘Sweetheart’ Pin Cushion
Heart-shaped pillow decorated with embroidered and decoupage patches, sequins and glass beads.
The embroidered poem is titled, ‘Think of Me’, and reads, ‘when the golden sun is sinking, and your mind from care set free, when of others you are thinking, will you sometimes Think of Me’.
It was believed that one of the best ways of recovering from the trauma of war was to keep busy and needlework was considered to be a great way of occupying the mind.
It is believed these pin cushions were commercially produced in kit form for convalescing soldiers as well as civilians.
This cushion is one of two cushions held in the collection made by a WWI soldier for his daughter to commemorate her birth.
