Tape Recording Machine
1940 - 1950
Magnetic tape recording machine. Made by Salford Electronic Instruments, Silk Street, Salford. They were a founder member of the General Electric Company (G.E.C.)
One of only two known to be still in existence (the other also in Salford’s collection). Example of early tape recording equipment manufactured in Salford. Fairly unique as the reels sat one above the other mounted on the same drive shaft.
Originally developed as a magnetic tape recorder for use in station announcements for British Railways. BR never progressed to the next phase so SEI decided to develop tape recorders for domestic market. The project failed and 12 units were sold off to staff.
