The Eckersley Sword
Loaned for display at Hindley Museum in 1937 and remaining under the care of Wigan from that date. Upon the death of the previous owner in 1985 ownership fell to a distant relative, Princess Nina Troubetzkoy of Switzerland and legal permission to retain the sword for the Wigan collection was sought and granted.
Sword and scabbard belonged to Nathaniel Eckersley, wealthy Mill owner born in Hindley. It was presented to him in 1827 by residents of Manchester as a tribute of respect and esteem and in grateful recollection of the important public services rendered by him.
