The Philips Testimonial

1885

A bound volume, in a velvet-lined box, containing an illuminated address to Robert Needham Philips followed by a large number of signatures of local people.

Presented to Robert Needham Philips on his 70th birthday to mark his retirement from politics. He served as Bury’s Liberal MP for a total of 22 years.

The Philips’s were a family of merchants originally from Tean in Staffordshire who moved to Manchester in the early 19th century and built and lived in The Park in Prestwich from 1799 – 1948.

They became a prominent family in the area and the second generation of Philips’s to live at The Park went on to be prominent people within the political world as well as being involved in education and other philanthropic pursuits.
