Untitled (Retail Park A)
2005 - 2006
Flynn made a 3D computer model of just such a park, and captured a series of stills from it showing the park at peace under a brooding Martian-red sky. In this example, the Pizza Hut architecture and Macdonald’s arches are instantly legible, but there is no trace of human presence in the image, no rubbish, graffiti, teenage drinkers or 50-something security guards made redundant from manufacturing jobs. Just an eerie, pristine site, sitting under the indifferent heavens that hover over it.
This deceptively simple image belies Flynn’s struggle with the raft of implications and histories that lie behind it.
The artist, Pat Flynn has exhibited regularly in the UK and abroad. Artist-led activities have included a residency at the University of Central England in Birmingham. He has taken part in group exhibitions at Bury Art Museum.
Other items by Flynn in the collection include one other large-scale Lamda print.
