William White’s Shop

19th Century

Reconstruction of William White’s haberdashers and small wares shop.

William White’s was a Stockport institution famously stocking everything from knicker elastic to coffin plates.

The shop was very near Christy’s hat factory on Higher Hillgate. Outworkers bought many of their supplies there, including needles, thimbles and finishing threads. Outworkers were local people employed by Christy’s who would finish and trim the hats in their own home.

The shop closed in the mid-1980s and many of the contents, signs and fittings are now in the care of Stockport Museums collection.
